Will she win the Fish Welfare Award 2023 at AquaNor?

Katrine Eliassen in Benchmark Genetics Salten has been nominated for this prestige award for her excellent and dedicated work for fish welfare.

The Fish Welfare Award from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the Institute of Marine Research will be presented at the AquaNor exhibition in Trondheim 23. August 2023. As Broodstock coordinator at Benchmark´s land-based facility in Norway, Katrine systematically evaluates the well-being of our broodstock fish. Every week she conducts assessments and monitors the behavior, skin health, and fin condition of fish in each individual tank. She records results, makes reports, and evaluates them with the production manager so measures to improve fish welfare can be taken.

Katrine is nominated for the Fish Welfare Award 2023.

In addition to addressing physical changes in the fish, Katrine emphasizes the importance of understanding the fish on both an individual and group basis as observing deviations from normal behavior can provide valuable insights into their health and well-being. She is delighted that fish welfare is a priority at Benchmark and appreciates the significant resources dedicated to ensuring the well-being of the fish in their care. Katrine’s passion for the welfare of the fish is evident, as she wrote her bachelor’s thesis on fish welfare and is dedicated to ensuring the fish are well cared for in her day job.

Katrine holds a degree in Aquaculture Management and Leadership from Nord University in Bodø and joined Benchmark as Broodstock Coordinator in 2020. She hails from the small village where Benchmark established a state-of-the-art broodstock facility in 2019. Katrine finds it fantastic to have the opportunity to work in Sørfjorden and be a part of such an innovative and dedicated team at Benchmark.
