New Senior Geneticist Joins Benchmark Genetics Services Team

Benchmark Genetics is pleased to announce the appointment of Ajithkumar Munusamy as Senior Geneticist in the company’s External Services team, starting June 16, 2025.

Ajith holds a PhD from IFREMER in France, completed through the EATFISH consortium, where his research focused on the genetic basis of disease resistance in mussels. He designed and led a selective breeding programme that combined quantitative genetics and genomics. He also brings experience from research placements at Nofima in Norway and SYSAAF in France, and is proficient in analytical tools including ASReml and BLUPF90.

Originally from a fishing village in India, Ajith has a personal and professional commitment to the role of genetics in supporting sustainable aquaculture. He will begin his role in France before relocating to Bergen later in the year.

Morten Rye, Director of External Services and International Strategies, will be Ajith’s line manager and welcomes him to the team:

“Ajith brings a rare combination of academic rigour and practical breeding programme experience. His motivation to apply genetic tools in real-world aquaculture aligns perfectly with our customer-centric approach. We are excited to involve him in a wide range of projects across species and geographies.”

Benchmark Genetics’ Genetic Services team provides strategic support and advanced genetic evaluations to aquaculture producers worldwide. This includes the design and implementation of breeding programmes, genomic analyses, and trait improvement strategies to enhance performance, health, and sustainability.
