Celebrating 25 Years of SalmoBreed: Pioneering Genetics for a Stronger Salmon Future

This year, Benchmark Genetics celebrates 25 years since the founding of SalmoBreed – our Norwegian family-based breeding program for Atlantic salmon.

Established in May 2001, SalmoBreed was founded at a time when the salmon industry was entering a phase of rapid growth and increasing biological challenges. The program was built on a clear ambition: to genetically improve Atlantic salmon through continuous and systematic selection, while also introducing competition to the norwegian salmon genetics market.

Over the years, SalmoBreed has evolved from a independent initiative into a nationally recognized strain known for rapid growth, late sexual maturity, strong resistance to diseases and parasites – contributing to improved performance, welfare and sustainability in salmon farming.

Since 2019, the strain has been produced at our land-based facility SalmoBreed Salten – now known as Benchmark Genetics Salten, in addition to Lønningdal and Bolaks. By manipulating controlling the photoperiods at Salten, we can continuously produce and deliver high-quality ova to the norwegian market year-round, ensuring predictability and optimal performance for our customers.

SalmoBreed is built on dedicated people, knowledge and long-term partnerships. Throughout the year, we will share the stories behind the science and the impact this program has had on modern aquaculture – from its beginnings as an independent breeding initiative in 2001 to a leading and relevant salmon strain in 2026.

We look forward to honoring the past and celebrating the present through the voices of the people, the performance of the fish and the value created for the aquaculture industry.
