Katrine Eliassen, our Quality Manager, shares her insights on why aquaculture has become a much more attractive industry for women than it once was, and what diversity means to her.
- What attracted you to the aquaculture industry?
I grew up in the small village where Benchmark Genetics Salten, the most advanced land-based facility for production of salmon ova in the world is now located. When I heard about this advanced facility being built so close to home, it sparked my curiosity. There are also many aquaculture jobs in northern Norway, where I prefer to live, and the industry seemed full of exciting opportunities. These factors combined led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture Operations and Management at Nord University in Bodø — a decision I’ve never regretted!
- What do you enjoy the most (and least) about your role?
I like to work with the structures in the background of our production and operations, for example through our QHSE management system. I also enjoy working with our certifications, preparing internal and external audits, and following up on them throughout the year. In this work I need to have detailed insight into our operations, and I find it inspiring. Risk management work is another example of this. I like to contribute to proactive thinking, where we work to prevent unwanted incidents from happening. This is important work, but also very interesting, as I get to work with a wide range of topics in a detailed and structured way.
- Tell us about the team you work with.
For the last years I have worked with the excellent team at Benchmark Genetics Salten. As I now have taken on a new role, I will work more broadly within Norway, while continuing to support the Salten team. I also look forward to collaborating with the quality teams in the other countries as well. Perfect combination!

- What is the best piece of advice you have been given in your career?
Any advice that has encouraged me to take on challenges and continue learning and developing.
- What is your recommendation to other women joining the aquaculture industry?
I would say the same as above. Dare to take on opportunities and challenges! Go out of your comfort zone, and the comfort zone will expand over time.
- What does diversity mean to you?
Diversity for me is a given. People come from different backgrounds, with different life experiences and knowledge. This is of course reflected in the workplace, and it is a strength that we can learn from each other.
- What could Benchmark Genetics keep doing / start doing to attract women to the industry?
Since joining Benchmark Genetics Salten around five years ago, it has not once occurred to me that I was being treated any different for being a woman. The working environment I have been a part of consists of both women and men, also in managerial positions, and this has felt a natural part of working at Benchmark Genetics. I acknowledge that in the world today this is not a given everywhere, so it is a good position to be in. We should not forget that – and keep up the good work.

- Why is it okay to not be perfect?
Nobody is perfect, so save yourself a lot of stress trying to be – and be as you are.
- What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy hiking in the beautiful Norwegian nature and being outdoors in general. I’m also a huge football fan and like to watch my favourite team on TV, or even better travel to the UK to watch live. I love to travel and experience different cultures.

- What’s your favourite meal?
Mexican cuisine, and a good homemade pasta.
- What’s your favourite aquatic animal, and why?
I have to say salmon, although maybe a bit of a boring answer. The more I work with salmon and learn about the species I just find it more fascinating. If I had to answer anything else, it would be whales – majestic creatures!
