Benchmark Genetics Chile Announces Strategic Shift

Benchmark Genetics Chile is refining its business model to focus exclusively on high-value genetics services for the aquaculture industry in Chile and across Latin America. As part of this strategic shift, local production of Atlantic salmon eggs in Chile will be phased out by the end of the year.

Benchmark Genetics Chile has announced a strategic shift in its operations to reinforce its position as a genetics partner to the aquaculture industry in Chile and the wider LATAM region. Going forward, the company will focus fully on delivering advanced genetics services that support long-term performance, competitiveness, and sustainability for salmon producers.

This decision follows a thorough evaluation of Benchmark Genetics’ strategic priorities in the region and reflects the growing demand for specialised genetic support, data-driven insights, and advisory services to improve fish performance and production outcomes.

Our commitment to the Chilean salmon industry remains strong,” says Juan Pablo Ramirez Torrealba, General Manager of Benchmark Genetics Chile. “By concentrating our resources on high-value genetics services and strategic advisory, we are able to deliver even greater value to producers, helping them achieve profitability, improved health and long-term sustainability.”

Our refined service offering includes:

  • Breeding program design and operational support
  • Broodstock assessment
  • Technical reviews and audits
  • Genotyping service
  • Bio-economic modelling and decision support
  • Cryopreservation laboratory services

These services are designed to support optimal breeding decisions, improve biological performance, and enhance the economic outcomes of production systems.

Phasing Out Local Egg Production

As part of this transition, local production of Atlantic salmon eggs in Chile will be discontinued by the end of the year. The decision is strategic in nature and aligned with the company’s long-term focus in the region.

Strengthening Genomic Capabilities

Producers in Chile and across Latin America will continue to benefit from Benchmark Genetics’ expanding capabilities in genotyping and genomic tool development, which are central to improving selection accuracy, detecting QTLs linked to economically important traits, and supporting data-driven management decisions.

Benchmark Genetics currently provides validated SNP panels for ~30 aquaculture species and has the capability to develop new, customised tools for emerging or locally important species—ensuring that producers across diverse production systems have access to the latest advancements in applied genomics.

These technologies enable producers to make more informed selection choices, enhance stock robustness, and achieve measurable gains in productivity and sustainability.

“This shift strengthens our ability to support producers where the impact is greatest,” adds Juan Pablo. “We look forward to continuing close collaboration with our partners and customers as we work together to drive sustainable growth and competitive performance in aquaculture.”
